CHAPTER: THE MERIT OF LICKING THE FINGERS AFTER TAKING FOOD AND WIPING THE DISH (WITH FINGERS) AND EATING OF THE FALLEN MOUTHFUL AFTER REMOVING THE DIRT STICKING TO IT  

No. 5037

Ibn 'Abbas reported Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam.) as saying: When any one of you eats food he should not wipe his hand until he has licked it himself or has given it to someone else to lick.

No. 5038

Ibn 'Abbas reported Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) as saying: When any one of you eats food he should not wipe his hand until he has licked it or got it licked by (someone else).

No. 5039

Ibn Ka'b b. Malik reported on the authority of his father that he saw Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) licking his three fingers (after having finished the food). Ibn Hatim made no mention of" three". This hadith is also narrated through another chain of transmitters.

No. 5040

Ibn Ka'b b. Malik reported on the authority of his father that the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) used to eat (food) with three fingers and he licked his hand before wiping it (with towel).

No. 5041

'Abdullah b. Ka'b reported that his father Ka'b narrated to him that Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) used to eat with three fingers and when he had finished (eating), he licked them.

No. 5042

A hadith like this has been reported on the authority of Ka'b b. Malik through another chain of transmitters.

No. 5043

Jabir reported that Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) commanded the licking of fingers and the dish, saying: You do not know in what portion the blessing lies."

No. 5044

Jabir reported Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) as saying: When any one of you drops a mouthful he should pick it up and remove any of the filth on it, and then eat it, and should not leave it for the Satan, and should not wipe his hand with towel until he has licked his fingers, for he does not know in what portion of the food the blessing lies.

No. 5045

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Sufyan with the same chain of transmitters but with a slight variation of wording.

No. 5046

Jabir reported: I heard Allaah's Prophet (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) as saying: The Satan is present with any one of you in everything he does; he is present even when he eats food; so if any one of you drops a mouthful he should remove away anything filthy on it and eat it and not leave for the devil; and when he finishes (food) he should lick his fingers, for he does not know in what portion of his food the blessing lies.

No. 5047

This hadith is reported on the authority of A'mash with the same chain of transmitters but with a slight variation of words but no mention is made of the first part of the hadith, i. e. the Satan is present with any one of you.

No. 5048

Jabir reported from Allaah's Messenger. (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) about mentioning the licking (of fingers) and the (falling of) the mouthful.

No. 5049

Anas reported that when Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) ate food he licked his three fingers, and he said: When any one of you drops a mouthful he should remove anything filthy from it and then eat it, and should not leave it for the Satan. He also commanded us that we should wipe the dish saying: You do not know in what portion of your food the blessing lies.

No. 5050

Abu Huraira reported Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) as saying: When any one of you cats food he should lick his fingers, for hen does not know in what part of the food sticking to his fingers the blessing lies. This hadith has been reported on the authority of Hammad with the same chain of transmitters, but with a slight variation of wording.
